Creating Your Wedding Budget: A Guide for Austin Couples

Congrats! You’re engaged!! I know how exciting, yet daunting, this season can be! It can be easy to just jump in & book the first vendors you come in contact with, but please don’t overlook the importance of planning out your wedding budget! Planning your budget should be the very FIRST step you do after getting engaged, and it will heavily impact the vendors that you book! As an Austin-based wedding planner, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with orchestrating the perfect celebration in the heart of Texas. Regardless of your chosen venue or theme, one thing remains constant: the importance of allocating your wedding budget wisely.

Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the intricacies of budget allocation for your dream wedding in Austin:

1. Establish Your Priorities:

Before diving into the nitty-gritty details & booking any vendors, sit down with your fiancé to discuss your priorities for the big day. What elements are non-negotiable? Whether it's a stunning venue, gourmet catering, or a live band to keep the dance floor buzzing, identifying your top priorities will guide your budget allocation process. I suggest choosing your top 3-4 vendors that are the most important to you, and allocating more of your budget towards those things.

2. Research Local Vendors:

The great thing about Austin is that we are not lacking in amazing wedding vendors! Take the time to research and meet with potential vendors to get a sense of their style, pricing, and availability. It’s not enough to just google “average wedding costs in Austin!” I can tell you right now that Google has not updated that false information since before COVID… It’s one thing to set a budget, but It’s a completely different thing to set a REALISTIC budget based on your location & the current economy. I truly believe this step is crucial if you want to set yourself up for success to not go over budget.

If you don’t know where to begin on reaching out to vendors or researching their pricing, I highly suggest booking a wedding planner! We’ve got ya covered!!

3. Allocate a Flexible Budget:

Now that you’ve done your vendor research in your area & you know the estimated costs of certain vendors, it’s time to set your total budget in place & decide what percentage of it is going toward each vendor! Go back to that priorities list that we discussed in step 1, because those top vendors should be your main priority when allocating your budget. The rest of your budget can be divided between the remaining vendors. It is also important to note who all is contributing to your wedding financially during this step. If you have multiple family members helping out, it is a good idea to divide the expenses among each party early on!

4. Plan for Contingencies:

This has to be some of my greatest advice for engaged couples- buffer room should be a part of your total wedding budget! No matter how meticulously you plan, unforeseen circumstances can arise during the wedding planning process. I suggest adding on 10% of your total budget to go towards any unexpected expenses that may arise. This will give you plenty of buffer room in your budget! Planning your budget well will make it harder to go over budget later on, and that means also planning for any additional costs or problems that come up. Give yourself some buffer room to save yourself the stress later on.

5. DIY with Caution:

While DIY projects can add a personal touch to your wedding decor, proceed with caution to avoid overspending or unnecessary stress. Choose DIY projects that align with your skillset and timeline, and be realistic about the time and resources required. Sometimes, it's more cost-effective to leave certain tasks to the professionals, allowing you to focus on enjoying your special day.

6. Don't Forget the Honeymoon:

As you allocate your wedding budget, don't overlook the importance of planning for your honeymoon. Whether you're dreaming of a tropical getaway or a European adventure, setting aside funds for your post-wedding trip is essential. Consider creating a separate budget specifically for your honeymoon to avoid dipping into your wedding funds.

Allocating your wedding budget is a balancing act that requires careful consideration and strategic planning. By establishing your priorities, researching local vendors, and keeping a flexible budget, you can create the wedding of your dreams without going over budget. Remember what this season is all about! If you ever get overwhelmed, it’s important to take a step back & refocus on what your big day actually means! You get to marry the love of your life! Don't hesitate to enlist the help of a professional wedding planner to guide you through the process if needed. With proper planning, your Austin wedding will be a day to remember for years to come!
